We Almost on Our Way to Yellowstone National Park

Pipe Creek, TX

All ready to go.

Hey wait a minute. I thought that we were supposed to be on the road to Yellowstone by now? What are we still doing in Pipe Creek? We had a slow start this morning, but finally we were on the road by 1:00 PM. And boy was it hot! Still we loaded up everything that we would need for the next 2 months, and a few thing that we wanted to bring, but will probably will never use. Anyway, we almost made it to Boerne–that’s a little more than 12 miles away–until Kim said, ” It’s a good thing that it’s not Labor Day weekend.” I glanced at the date on my watch and replied, Oh, f–k me, it IS Labor Day Weekend! I didn’t make any camping reservations. We will never get a spot.”

Kim enjoying the AC after a long drive.

She assured me that it wasn’t because she had bought her new hiking boots last weekend at REI’s Labor Day Sale, but of course, after checking with Siri on her iPhone we found that it was indeed a holiday. So what else could we do, but head on back to the house and leave perhaps on Sunday. “Oh well,” she groaned, “at least the house is clean.”

So now we sit listening to music and drinking a glass of wine. That’s kinda like a holiday, except that’s pretty much what we do almost everyday at 3:30!

A real life American Action Hero

Rambo on his way to fight imaginary villains

What does a real life hero look like. Here is a picture of one of my favorite TV hero's. I have watched Sylvester Stalone in the Rambo movies probably too many times to count. He sure looks ready for anything.

But what does a REAL life hero really look like? I think that it is somebody who just sees a need in the world, gets up and says, “Hey! I think I might be able to help with that.” They are just ordinary people who are as afraid of the unknown as we all are, but somehow, someway they rise above their fears. Like us, they sometimes wake up in the middle of the night sweating with fear, but still they rise up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and get on with what needs to be done.

A real life American hero

What does a REAL life hero look like? She looks like my 72 year old wife who after helping stop the spead of Ebola in Liberia, Africa ( she says she had a lot of help from MSF, Doctors Without Borders) is now off once again, this time to Sierra Leone to hopefully do the same. She says she is going to try to stop the spread of ebola there, so we don't have to worry about it here. This Is what the face of a REAL true American hero looks like, and I am once again proud to be able to support her in her quest, and I hope all of you can do the same?

You can read all about her work at my blog or go right to the source in her blog https://kimfedericisblog.wordpress.com

I know she would appreciate a thought or comment, a word of encouragement, or just a simple thank-you note as she begins her work of making the world just a little safer. She will be gone for the next two months. As I write this she is in the air on her way to Africa, and I couldn't be prouder to call her my friend.

But of course that's just my opinion!

Back home

Home in Pipe Creek, TX
March 7, 2015

Back home and sitting comfortably in front of the fireplace. Yes, it IS cold in Texas. Costa Rica seems like a distant memory. All I have left are the blog entries, my photos and my memories.

Tomorrow I bid adieu to Kim who leaves for Sierra Leone. She will be there for the next few months working for Doctors Without Borders. I will be playing bachelor. I need to start working on projects around the house, and start making stock for the start of my show season, but believe me when I say that I am already planning my new trip. Mmmmm! Let's see. Columbia, Cuba or maybe Papua New Guinea!

Is this a happy man, or what?

We are on our way home

Surfing into the sunset

That's it! Today we catch a taxi to take us to the Airport Hilton. Don't ask how we can go from virtually camping at Palo Verde to the Hilton. None the less we are beginning our journey that we take us back to Pipe Creek, Texas.

It has been a most unusual trip for us. There have been some real highs, and although there certainly have been lows, we have tried our best not to let it get us down. After all we are on vacation.

In the last few days we have had some wonderful bonding time with Leslianna, John and Paige, as well as Stacey who is Leslianna's best friends. We have had some very nice trips to the beach for sunrise and sunset as well as some nice meals in between. They are all what you would call “foodies”. They love to talk about food stories before and after meals. That has just never been me, still I have genuinely enjoyed the comrodery and the laughter along with them. What a nice bunch of people!

Wow, here are a few photos from the last few days.

Is she happy, or what?

John and Paige happy, happy happy!
